Austin's Growth Has Made Its Roads More Dangerous

Austin is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. The population of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area has surged past 2.4 million, and the road infrastructure has struggled to keep pace. More cars on the same roads means more congestion, more aggressive driving, and more accidents.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation's Crash Records Information System (CRIS), Travis County recorded over 19,000 motor vehicle crashes in 2024, resulting in hundreds of serious injuries and dozens of fatalities. Many of these crashes are concentrated on the same roads and at the same intersections year after year.

I-35 Through Central Austin

Interstate 35 is the most dangerous road in Austin by virtually every measure. The stretch of I-35 running through central Austin, from the southern boundary near Slaughter Lane to the northern edge near Parmer Lane, has been identified as one of the most crash-prone highway segments in Texas.

The problems on I-35 are well documented. The highway was designed decades ago for far fewer vehicles than it now carries. Narrow lanes, short merge zones, sharp curves near downtown, and the mix of local commuter traffic with long-haul commercial trucks create a constant state of hazard. The ongoing I-35 expansion project (the CapEx project) has added construction zone dangers, including lane shifts, reduced speeds, and confused drivers navigating temporary barriers.

Rear-end collisions are the most common crash type on I-35 in Austin. Sudden stops in heavy traffic catch distracted drivers off guard. But the highway also sees a disproportionate number of multi-vehicle pileups, commercial truck crashes, and wrong-way driver incidents, particularly late at night.

Highway 183 (Research Boulevard and Ed Bluestein Boulevard)

Highway 183 cuts across Austin from the northwest to the southeast, and its various segments present different hazards. The Research Boulevard section in northwest Austin features high-speed traffic mixed with commercial driveways, turning vehicles, and pedestrians crossing multiple lanes. The Ed Bluestein Boulevard section on the east side has limited lighting, high speeds, and intersections with poor visibility.

The Highway 183 corridor consistently ranks among the top five most dangerous roads in Travis County for serious injury crashes. The combination of speed, volume, and access points creates conditions where a momentary lapse in attention can result in a catastrophic collision.

Lamar Boulevard

Lamar Boulevard runs north-south through central Austin and is one of the city's busiest arterial roads. The stretch between 290 and 51st Street is particularly dangerous due to the high volume of traffic, numerous commercial driveways, and the presence of cyclists and pedestrians sharing the roadway.

The intersection of Lamar and Rundberg Lane has historically been one of the most dangerous intersections in Austin. High traffic volumes, multiple turn lanes, a concentration of commercial activity, and a pattern of red-light running contribute to a steady stream of collisions at this location.

South Congress Avenue and Ben White Boulevard Intersection

The intersection of South Congress Avenue and Ben White Boulevard (Highway 71) is a high-volume junction that handles traffic from multiple directions. Vehicles merging onto and off of Ben White compete with South Congress through-traffic, and the complex lane configurations create confusion for drivers who are unfamiliar with the area. Left-turn collisions and rear-end crashes are common at this intersection.

William Cannon Drive

William Cannon Drive in south Austin carries heavy east-west traffic through residential and commercial areas. The road has multiple traffic signals, but the spacing between signals and the speed of traffic create conditions where drivers frequently run red lights or fail to stop in time. The intersections of William Cannon with South First Street, Manchaca Road, and Westgate Boulevard have all been identified as high-crash locations.

Parmer Lane

Parmer Lane in north Austin has transformed from a relatively quiet suburban road into a major commuter corridor as development has expanded northward. The road carries high volumes of traffic at high speeds, with intersections at MoPac, I-35, and Dessau Road that have become increasingly dangerous as traffic volumes have grown. The intersection of Parmer Lane and I-35 is one of the busiest and most crash-prone interchanges in north Austin.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Danger Zones

Austin's most dangerous roads for pedestrians and cyclists do not always overlap with the most dangerous roads for vehicle occupants. Pedestrian fatalities are concentrated on high-speed arterial roads where sidewalks are absent or inadequate, crosswalks are poorly marked, and lighting is insufficient.

The corridors with the highest pedestrian crash rates include portions of North Lamar Boulevard, East Riverside Drive, South Pleasant Valley Road, and Rundberg Lane. These areas share common characteristics including high-speed traffic, limited pedestrian infrastructure, and land use patterns that place commercial destinations on opposite sides of busy roads without safe crossing options.

Cyclist crashes are concentrated on roads where bike lanes are absent, where existing bike lanes are narrow and unprotected, or where drivers must cross bike lanes to make right turns. The City of Austin's All Ages and Abilities Bicycle Network plan has identified priority corridors for protected bike lanes, but implementation is ongoing and many of the most dangerous segments remain unprotected.

What to Do If You Are in an Accident at a Dangerous Intersection

If you are involved in a crash at one of these high-risk locations, the steps you take immediately afterward can affect the outcome of your case.

Call 911 and wait for police. Do not leave the scene. Make sure a police report is filed.

Document the scene. Photograph the intersection, traffic signals, road markings, signage, and any visibility obstructions. These details can help prove that the road design contributed to the crash.

Note the traffic signal status. If the crash involved a red-light runner, note the signal status when the collision occurred. Ask witnesses if they observed the signal.

Preserve dashcam footage. If you have a dashcam, save the footage immediately. If nearby businesses have exterior cameras, note their locations so your attorney can request the footage before it is overwritten.

Get witness information. At busy intersections, there are often multiple witnesses. Collect names and phone numbers from anyone who saw the crash.

Government Liability for Dangerous Road Design

In some cases, the design or maintenance of a dangerous road or intersection may itself be a contributing factor in the crash. If a government entity (the City of Austin, Travis County, or the Texas Department of Transportation) knew about a dangerous condition and failed to address it, the entity may be liable under the Texas Tort Claims Act (Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Chapter 101).

Government liability claims have strict notice requirements and shorter deadlines than private claims. If you believe the road design or maintenance contributed to your accident, consult an attorney immediately.
